EarthDay2007: Getting Green for Being Green
Commonly Overlooked Recyclables
Wireless Phones, PDAs, and iPods
All of these electronic devices can be recycled, with any saved data
completely erased in the process. For more information, link to www.SellyourCell.com.
Computer Floppy Disk and Video Tapes
Disks can be stripped of all current information, disassembled and separated
into paper, plastics and disks. They can then be tested, labeled and reused. For more info, link to GreenDisk, Inc..
Eyeglasses
Old lenses and frames can be made available to someone else in need. Chances
are an optician of club in your area collects eyeglasses for reuse. Also,
you might consider having your old glasses tinted and made into sunglasses. For more information, link to The Lions Clubs
Polystyrene Packing and Peanuts
While not technically recyclable, they can be reused. Many packing, shipping
and moving stores will take used peanuts. For more information, link to The Alliance of Foam Packaging Recyclers.
Smoke Detectors
Many common smoke detectors contain a small amount of Americium 241, a
radioactive material. Detector companies accept returned radioactive
detectors for disposal as hazardous waste. The vast majority of smoke detectors are made by First Alert Corporation. Send old detectors to First Alert, Radioactive Waste Disposal, 780 McClure Rd, Aurora, IL 60504-2495, 1-800-323-9005.
“Disposable” single use cameras
Research indicates that very few disposal cameras are actually recycled. An
environmentally responsible alternative may be to purchase inexpensive fully
automatic cameras instead. They will give better results and cost less to
use than the disposables.
Carpet
While you as the individual consumer generally can't recycle your old
carpet, ask carpet installers and renovation companies if they will do it
for you. For more information, link to DuPont's Carpet Recycling Information
SellyourCell.com is also participating in Earth Day 2007 by offering every
customer an additional $3.00 per approved order. SellyourCell.com calls this
"getting green for being green", as recycling used cellular phones can be
important step towards helping the environment. The three dollar promotion
is SellyourCell.com's way of providing that extra little incentive for
people to do their part during the Earth Day celebration.
To qualify for the Earth Day promo, order must be placed between April 18th
and April 30th, 2007. The promotion is open to both new and existing
SellyourCell.com customers, and SellyourCell.com's regular terms and
conditions apply.
SellyourCell.com is a committed recycling company that uses positive
environmental practices to extend the lives of used wireless products. You
can read more about the company at www.sellyourcell.com.
